Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive? No. What to know before you buy

Published · VoltVault Team

Short answer: no. The PlayStation 5 Pro has no built-in disc drive, so out of the box it runs digital games only. Sony sells a separate Disc Drive that attaches to the PS5 Pro if you want to play discs later. If you want discs from day one, the PS5 Disc Edition has the drive built in.

What our PS5 Pro listing says

Our PlayStation 5 Pro is listed at $789 USD, open-box and never used. Its product page lists 2TB SSD of storage and says, in its highlights: no disc drive (add-on compatible). That means the console works without a drive, and Sony's drive can be added to it.

Adding Sony's disc drive to a PS5 Pro

Sony sells its Disc Drive separately from the console. These points are from Sony's own pages:

  • Sony's compatibility guide for PS5 Pro consoles lists the disc drive with cover as compatible (PlayStation Support, checked October 24, 2026).
  • The drive clips into the console after you remove a cover, then you fit the longer horizontal feet that come with the drive. An internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console the first time you set it up (PlayStation Support, checked October 24, 2026).
  • Sony says the drive plays PS5 games and supported PS4 titles on disc, plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs (PlayStation Direct, checked October 24, 2026).

We don't include a disc drive with the PS5 Pro and we don't sell the add-on. Check Sony's store or your usual retailer for its current price.
