Does the Xbox Series S have a disc drive?

Published · VoltVault Team

No. The Xbox Series S has no disc drive: Microsoft calls it an all-digital console, so it plays no game discs, Blu-ray or DVDs. If you want discs, the Xbox Series X has a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. VoltVault sells both, open-box and never used: the Xbox Series S (512GB Digital) at $199 USD and the Xbox Series X (1TB Disc) at $379 USD, shipped from Utah, USA within 2 business days of confirmed payment with free tracked shipping and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

What Microsoft says about the Series S and discs

Microsoft's own answer to "Will Xbox Series S play game discs?" is a plain no. Its Series S page says the Series S consoles "are all-digital gaming consoles for disc-free gaming" and that "Disc-based games are not compatible with the 512GB or 1TB" Series S. A footnote on the same page reads: "Use with digital games only; console does not play physical discs." That covers movies too, so a Series S is not a Blu-ray or DVD player.

Older games work the same way. Microsoft says digital Xbox One games you own that are in the backward-compatibility catalog show up under "Ready to Install" on a Series S, and that "Disc-based games are not supported."

Series S vs Series X: the disc question

Microsoft says both consoles play thousands of games across four generations of Xbox. The drive is the difference that matters here: Microsoft's Series X page lists its optical drive as "4K UHD Blu-Ray".

Can you add a disc drive to a Series S?

Not according to Microsoft. The add-ons Microsoft lists for the Series S are for storage (expansion storage and USB external hard drives, sold separately). There is no disc drive among them, and Microsoft says disc-based games are not compatible with any Series S. If you want to play discs, buy the Xbox with the drive built in.

I already own Xbox discs. What are my options?

If you have Xbox One or Series X game discs, there are two routes:

  • Get the Series X and play the discs in it. Microsoft says that for backward-compatible disc games, you insert the disc and the console downloads the game, and the disc stays in the drive while you play.
  • Disc to digital licensing, if you also have an Xbox with a drive. Microsoft's Series X page says supported Xbox One and Series X discs go into an Xbox console that has an optical disc drive to claim a digital license, and after that "You'll no longer need the disc to play." It is offered in select markets only, with one license per disc, and Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are not supported. Xbox Support has the details.

With no Xbox that has a drive, a disc collection points to the Series X.

Which one should you buy?

  • Xbox Series S if you buy games digitally or play through Game Pass and you game on a 1080p or 1440p screen. It is the smaller, cheaper box. Does the Xbox Series S come with Game Pass? covers the subscription.
  • Xbox Series X if you own discs, buy used games, want a 4K Blu-ray player under the TV, or play on a 4K TV.
