Sony WH-1000XM6 vs XM5: should you upgrade?

Updated · VoltVault Team

If your WH-1000XM5 already handles your listening day, the XM6 is not an automatic upgrade. Sony gives both models the same maximum music-playback ratings. The documented spec differences are the noise-canceling processor, the LC3 codec, the Bluetooth version and the weight, and Sony describes the XM6 with folding earcups. Everything below comes from Sony's published specifications, not from our own listening or noise-cancellation measurements.

Battery, charging, codec, Bluetooth and weight entries are from Sony's specification sheets (XM6, XM5). The processor names are from Sony's XM6 product page. Battery figures are Sony's maximum ratings; your settings and use change real results.

Choose by what you want to change

  • Longer battery life: Sony's maximum ratings are the same for both, so battery alone is not a reason to switch from a healthy XM5.
  • Packing them every day: Sony's XM6 product page describes folding earcups for easier portability and storage. Check the case against your own bag.
  • A specific Bluetooth format: LC3 is on the XM6 list only; both list AAC and LDAC. Your phone or player also has to support the format.
  • Noise canceling: the XM6 uses Sony's QN3 processor and the XM5 the QN1. We do not name a noise-canceling, microphone or comfort winner from a spec sheet.

If your XM5 works well and none of these matters to you, keeping it is a reasonable choice.

Common questions

Should I upgrade from the Sony XM5 to the XM6?

Consider the XM6 if its folding earcups, LC3 support or newer QN3 processor matter to you. If your XM5 already meets your needs, keeping it is reasonable. This guide does not claim a measured sound or noise-canceling improvement.

Does the Sony XM6 have longer rated battery life than the XM5?

No. Sony lists up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off for both models. These are maximum ratings, not guaranteed real-world results.

Which Bluetooth audio formats do the XM6 and XM5 support?

Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 for the XM6, and SBC, AAC and LDAC for the XM5. Your source device must also support the format you want to use.

Does VoltVault sell the WH-1000XM5?

No. The XM5 is in this guide for comparison only. The product we sell here is the Sony WH-1000XM6, open-box, never used.
