Why is the iPhone 18 Pro Max so expensive?
Apple priced the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max from $1,299 (US) for 256GB when it announced the phone on September 9, 2026 (Apple's September 9, 2026 press release). VoltVault has the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max in stock at $1,100: open-box, never used, free tracked shipping from Utah, USA and 30-day returns.

Apple's release does not give a reason for the price. Its own numbers show the change: the iPhone 17 Pro Max started at $1,199 (US) with 256GB in its September 2025 release, so the 18 Pro Max starts $100 higher for the same storage.
Geekblog, a tech news site, puts the rise down to memory: it reports that contract prices for the memory and flash storage inside phones "roughly tripled over the first three quarters of 2026", and that the sizes with the most storage went up the most. That is Geekblog's reading, not something Apple has said.
. Apple can change its prices; Apple's US iPhone 18 Pro shop page shows today's figure.
What Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max adds
- Screen: 6.9 inches, the larger of the two iPhone 18 Pro sizes
- Main camera: a 48MP Fusion Main camera, now with variable aperture
- Chip: A20 Pro with a next-generation vapor chamber for sustained performance
- Battery: up to 45 hours of video playback on the eSIM-only Pro Max; Apple calls it the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone, from Apple silicon and a larger battery
- Storage: 256GB to start, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB above it
These are Apple's descriptions from Apple's September 9, 2026 press release, not our measurements. Apple does not give any of them as the reason for the price.

Common questions
Why is the iPhone 18 Pro Max so expensive?
Apple priced the 6.9-inch 256GB model at $1,299 (US), $100 above the iPhone 17 Pro Max's $1,199 start a year earlier. Apple gives no reason. Geekblog, a tech news site, puts it down to higher memory chip prices; Apple has not said so. VoltVault has the 256GB model at $1,100, open-box and never used.
Did Apple say why the iPhone 18 Pro Max costs more?
No. Its September 9, 2026 release gives the $1,299 starting price and the new hardware, but no reason for the increase.
How much more is the iPhone 18 Pro Max than the iPhone 17 Pro Max?
At launch, $100 more in the US for 256GB: Apple started the iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,199 in September 2025 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299 in September 2026.
Why do some iPhone 18 Pro Max prices look higher?
$1,299 is the 256GB model. Apple also sells 512GB, 1TB and 2TB versions, and each costs more. We sell the 256GB model only, so $1,100 is for that one.
Is $1,100 the price of the smaller iPhone 18 Pro?
No. $1,100 is for the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max with 256GB. The 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro is a different phone with its own price on its own product page.
Does it work with my carrier?
It is the US model, eSIM only, with no SIM tray. Your carrier has to be able to activate an eSIM on an iPhone bought in the US. Carrier details are on request: ask us at orders@shopvoltvault.com before you pay.
Is it refurbished?
No. It is open-box, never used: the box was opened, so we do not call it factory-sealed, but nobody has used the phone.
