Used vs Microsoft refurbished vs open-box

Three words, three different histories. Here is what each one means for an Xbox Series X, with Microsoft's own terms for its refurbished consoles.

Used

A used Xbox Series X has been played by someone else. Its condition, its controller and whether it has been reset all depend on the person selling it. Microsoft's own description: used devices "are typically sold as-is by individual sellers". If you buy used, power it on before you pay, check that it has been removed from the previous owner's account, and ask what return option the seller gives you.

Microsoft Certified Refurbished

Microsoft sells refurbished Xbox Series X consoles through its own store. In Microsoft's words, every Certified Refurbished product "is extensively screened, repaired, tested, and cleaned to high Microsoft standards", and it arrives "repackaged in its own Microsoft Certified Refurbished box with all standard accessories and manuals included". Microsoft lists the warranty as "90 days for XBOX consoles, plus additional extended warranty options" (Certified Refurbished page).

For returns, Microsoft Store's returns page says you can return almost any physical product within 60 days, in like-new condition and in its original packaging, and that purchases made from October 1 to December 2, 2026 can be returned through January 31, 2027. Check the refurbished listing's own terms before you buy, because they can change.

Open-box, never used (what we sell)

Open-box means the retail box has been opened, but the console inside has not been used and nothing on it was repaired. The unit may have been powered on to inspect it.
