How to play a DVD on a PS5

Sony's instructions are one line: "To play a Blu-ray Disc™ or DVD, insert the disc into the disc slot. Disc Player appears on your media home, and playback can begin." There is nothing to install. Sony lists these disc formats as supported on PS5 consoles (support page):

  • 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
  • Blu-ray Disc: BD-ROM, BD-R/RE
  • DVD: DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW

Sony's manual adds that the encryption key for copy-protected Blu-ray movies "is automatically renewed if the console is connected to the internet", so keep the console online now and then if you watch Blu-ray films.

DVDs and discs that won't work

Sony lists "DVDs that have not been finalized" as unsupported, so a home-burned DVD has to be finalized in the recorder first. Sony also warns not to use 8 cm discs, non-circular discs, cracked or repaired discs, or discs with stickers or paper labels, because they may damage the console. Old PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 game discs do not play on a PS5 either; the manual says those formats "cannot be played from a disc".

Region codes

DVDs and Blu-ray movies can carry a region code. Sony's PS5 manual says "the DVD region code is set to the code of the DVD played for the first time", and that "you can change the BD/DVD region code of your console to the disc played. You can change the region code up to four times." If you buy movies from more than one country, mind that limit.

Digital Edition and PS5 Pro: no DVDs without the add-on drive

Sony's support page says the original PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-1000 model group) "doesn't support disc-based games or media", and that its add-on disc drive (CFI-ZDD1 series, sold separately) works with the newer CFI-2000 Digital Edition and with the PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 model group). If you want to play DVDs without buying a second box, the Disc Edition is the simple choice. More detail: PS5 Digital vs Disc and does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
