Performance and power
There is no honest number-for-number answer from the makers. Nintendo says the Switch 2 runs on a custom processor made by NVIDIA and publishes no clock speed, graphics figure or memory size. Valve lists the Steam Deck's 6 nm AMD chip in detail: four Zen 2 cores, eight RDNA 2 graphics units and 1.6 TFLOPS. We haven't run the two side by side, so we won't name a winner.
What the spec pages do tell you is how each one shows a game. The Switch 2 screen is sharper and faster (1920x1080 at up to 120 Hz against 1280x800 at up to 90Hz), and docked to a TV the Switch 2 goes up to 4K at 60 fps. The Steam Deck's own screen is OLED, with deeper blacks than an LCD.
Screen: OLED or LCD
The Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD with HDR10. Nintendo's spec page lists only that LCD, so there is no OLED version of the Switch 2 to choose. Valve's store sells the Steam Deck with a 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen in both sizes. If you're weighing the older OLED Switch, Switch 2 vs Switch OLED compares those two.
Battery life
Nintendo estimates about 2 to 6.5 hours for the Switch 2 and says it depends on the game; a full charge takes about 3 hours in sleep mode. Valve says 3 to 12 hours of gameplay for the Steam Deck OLED. On paper the Steam Deck lasts longer, but in both cases a demanding game sits at the low end.
Size and weight
The Switch 2 is about 10.7 inches wide, 4.5 inches tall and 0.55 inches thick with its Joy-Con 2 attached (1.2 inches at the sticks), and weighs about 1.18 lb. Valve lists the Steam Deck at 298 x 117 x 49 mm, about 11.7 x 4.6 x 1.9 inches, and about 640 g, roughly 1.4 lb. So the Switch 2 is the lighter one to hold, with the larger screen.
Games: where each one gets them
The Switch 2 plays Switch 2 game cards and downloads, and Nintendo says its game card slot also takes original Nintendo Switch game cards; not every Switch game is compatible, so check each title. Does the Switch 2 play Switch games? covers your old library. The Steam Deck runs SteamOS and opens your Steam library, with a compatibility rating shown for each game. If the games you want are Nintendo's, the Switch 2 is the one that plays them.
