Will a US PS5, Xbox or Switch 2 work in my country? Region locks explained

Updated

Most of our buyers live outside the US, and the first question about a console from a US store is whether it will work at home. Here is what Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo say on their own support pages, so you can check before you pay. Everything at VoltVault is open-box, never used, with free tracked shipping worldwide from Utah, USA.

The short answer

For games, these consoles are not region locked the way older ones were. Sony's own PS5 FAQ answers "Are PS5 games region-locked?" with "No", and Nintendo says Switch 2 game cards are not region locked. What can still differ by region: movie Blu-ray and DVD discs, gift cards and store accounts, Nintendo's Japan-only Switch 2, manufacturer warranty, and the power supply. Each is covered below.

Nintendo Switch 2

  • Nintendo's Switch 2 Regional Compatibility FAQ says Switch 2 game cards are not region locked. Nintendo also says it has not tested all overseas software with consoles from every region, so it recommends software made for your console's region. You can see a game's region on the box, or under Software Information, then Support Information.
  • Nintendo eShop cards only work in the eShop country or region they were sold for.
  • In Japan, Nintendo sells a Japanese-language, Japan-only Switch 2 that links only to Nintendo Accounts set to Japan. That restriction belongs to that one model.
  • Nintendo says the limited warranty applies only in the country or region where the console was meant to be sold, and lists voltage, wireless rules and warranty as things to consider before using a Switch 2 in another country.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 ($449 USD): includes the console, dock, Joy-Con 2 and cables.

Power and plugs

Each product page lists what's included. Before paying, check the power supply's input label against your local supply and socket. A plug adapter changes plug shape, not voltage or frequency. If you want us to read the label on the exact unit you're buying, email orders@shopvoltvault.com before you order.

Delivery, payment and returns

We dispatch within 2 business days of confirmed payment. International transit then takes about 6–10 business days, with tracking. Pick your country at checkout; shipping stays at $0. Pay by card (secure checkout via PayPal) or crypto (BTC, ETH, USDC, USDT, SOL), only in our store checkout. You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee; see shipping and returns.

Common questions

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 region locked?

Nintendo says Switch 2 game cards are not region locked, though it recommends software made for your console's region because it hasn't tested every overseas game. The Japan-only Japanese-language model links only to Japanese Nintendo Accounts, and eShop cards only work in the region they were sold for.

Are PS5 games region locked?

No. Sony's official PS5 FAQ says PS5 games are not region-locked. Standard Blu-ray movies carry region codes; Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free.

Will a US Xbox Series X work in Europe or the UK?

Xbox Support explains how to play your games on other Xbox consoles by signing in with your Microsoft account, though not every game is sold in every country. Standard Blu-ray and DVD movies follow the console's region; Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free. Check the power supply label against your local supply before you plug in.

Does the manufacturer warranty work abroad?

Nintendo says its Switch 2 limited warranty applies only in the country or region where the console was meant to be sold. Every VoltVault order also has our own 30-day money-back guarantee.

Can I pay by card?

Yes. You can pay by card or crypto (BTC, ETH, USDC, USDT, SOL) in our store checkout.
