Used vs Microsoft refurbished vs open-box: the Series S side by side

On a Series S the three labels matter in a specific way: the console is all-digital, so every game sits on an Xbox account rather than on a disc, and its 512GB drive is the only storage it ships with. Microsoft's terms for its refurbished consoles are quoted below as written.

Buying a used Series S

Microsoft's own line on this is that used devices "are typically sold as-is by individual sellers". With no disc drive, a Series S is only as clean as its account setup. Before handing over money, ask the seller to sign out of their profile and run a factory reset (Settings, System, Console info, Reset console), then sign in with your own account. Ask to see the controller pair and a game download start, and get the seller's return terms in writing, if there are any.

Buying a Microsoft Certified Refurbished Series S

Microsoft lists a Certified Refurbished Series S on its store (Microsoft's Series S refurbished listing). Its hub page says each Certified Refurbished product "is extensively screened, repaired, tested, and cleaned to high Microsoft standards" and comes in a Certified Refurbished box with accessories and manuals. Coverage per the Certified Refurbished page: "90 days for XBOX consoles, plus additional extended warranty options".

Returns follow Microsoft Store's returns page: almost any physical product within 60 days, in like-new condition and in its original packaging. A holiday window also applies: orders placed October 1 to December 2, 2026 can go back through January 31, 2027. Terms on a listing can change, so read them on the day you order.

Open-box, never used: what that means here

Our Series S comes in its retail box, which has been opened. Nobody has gamed on it and it was never sent for repair. It is not sold as sealed, and not as refurbished. The condition line on the product page reads "Open-box, never used". The general open-box vs refurbished vs new guide explains the three terms for every product we stock.

How to decide

  • Pick Microsoft refurbished when a 90-day warranty from Microsoft on a restored unit is the deciding factor.
  • Pick open-box, never used when you want a Series S no one has played, backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee rather than a warranty promise.
  • Pick used when you can meet the seller, see the reset happen and are fine with as-is terms.

What is the difference between a used and a refurbished Xbox Series S?

Microsoft puts it this way: Certified Refurbished devices are professionally inspected, restored and tested before resale, while used devices are typically sold as-is by individual sellers.

What warranty does a Microsoft Certified Refurbished Xbox Series S have?

Microsoft's Certified Refurbished page says Xbox consoles include a 90-day warranty, plus additional extended warranty options.

No. Microsoft says a Certified Refurbished device arrives repackaged in its own Microsoft Certified Refurbished box, with all standard accessories and manuals.

We don't advertise or promise manufacturer warranty coverage unless it is verified for that exact unit. If it arrives dead or not as listed, we cover return shipping; if you change your mind, you cover return postage.
