iPhone Duo problems: screen, crease and what to check
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, and its first weeks have brought real reports of problems. Here is what owners and the tech press have reported so far, with dated sources, and what to check before you buy one.
Pick the Duo if you want the 7.6-inch inner display and accept the risks of a first-generation foldable. US model, eSIM only.
Open-box, never used · Card or crypto · Free tracked shipping worldwide
No fold and no hinge: the same A20 Pro chip in a regular 6.9-inch phone with longer rated battery life, at a lower price. Also a US model, eSIM only.

The short answer
Some early owners report that the iPhone Duo's inner screen cracked along the hinge, and MacRumors reported on October 23, 2026 that it isn't known how widespread this is. Reviewers also say the crease is still there if you look for it, battery life gets you through a day with little to spare, and some apps aren't made for the inner screen yet. If you want the 7.6-inch inner display, these are first-generation risks to accept; if they worry you, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has the same A20 Pro chip and no fold.
Reported problems so far
Every point below comes from the dated sources listed at the end of this page. None of these sources gives a failure rate, so we don't give one either.
Inner screen cracks along the hinge
MacRumors reported that some owners shared photos on Reddit and the MacRumors forums of inner screens that cracked along the hinge, most with a line of bright pixels across one side of the screen. One owner in Australia said his screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings, with no marks on the screen or the hinge beforehand, and Apple replaced the phone right away.
MacRumors also said that several of the photos came from demo units in China, that the backstory of most of the images is unknown and user damage may be a factor, and that some reviewers' folding tests showed no screen problems, though that is a small sample. It isn't known how widespread the issue is.
The crease
Apple says the inner display is flat and smooth, with a nano-texture finish, and that optically clear adhesives let the display layers glide as the screen folds, minimizing stress and crease. Reviewers say a crease is still there. PetaPixel said you can see it only if you're really looking for it, and that you can feel it as a subtle bump. Mashable said it can be felt but can rarely be seen.
Mashable also cited a YouTube test that folded a Duo 10,000 times; the tester said the hinge was still very smooth. Mashable said it is hard to say whether the crease will become an issue after a year or two or three of use.
Battery life
Apple rates the iPhone Duo at up to 24 hours of typical use. In PetaPixel's review, a full day of moderate to heavy use, from 7 AM to 9:30 PM, left the battery just under 30 percent, and the review called battery life just barely good enough. Apple says it charges up to 50 percent in around 20 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter or higher, sold separately.
Apps that aren't made for the Duo yet
Apps that haven't been updated for the Duo can run in a smaller window on the inner display. PetaPixel named YouTube Studio, Duolingo, Gmail and Firefox, and Mashable named Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. Mashable's writer bet that 90 percent of popular apps will have Duo-ready versions within a month. That is a prediction, not a promise.
Touch ID and one-handed use
Apple says the Duo uses Touch ID, built into the side button. PetaPixel found Touch ID slower than Face ID for unlocking, and the phone awkward to use one-handed.
The inner FaceTime camera
Mashable said the FaceTime camera under the inner screen is bad for taking photos and should realistically be used only for video calls. The Duo can still take great selfies with its rear cameras, though Mashable called that a little impractical for a quick selfie.
eSIM only
The Duo has no physical SIM tray. Apple says iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, so check that your carrier offers eSIM on iPhone before you buy. Every iPhone Duo we sell is a US model, eSIM only.
Should you buy now or wait?
Wait if you'd rather see whether more hinge or screen reports appear, if you rely on apps that haven't been updated for the inner screen, or if you need a physical SIM. Mashable suggested that anyone worried about bugs could wait a month or two to see whether they get fixed.
