Does PS5 play PS4 games?
Yes, for most PS4 games. Sony says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games play on a PS5, and a PS4 game disc needs a PS5 with a disc drive.
VoltVault's PS5 Slim Disc Edition, 1TB, open-box, never used, in stock at $399 USD. Ships from Utah, USA within 2 business days of confirmed payment, with 30-day returns.

How to play PS4 discs on a PS5
- Insert your supported PS4 game disc into a PS5 with a disc drive. You may need to download an update.
- Select the game's hub from Games home.
- Keep the disc inserted each time you play. Owning the disc does not turn it into a disc-free digital license.
Our Slim Disc Edition includes the drive. If you are comparing models, read PS5 Digital vs Disc. We do not sell the Digital Edition. For the Pro's separate drive requirement, see does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive? and does PS5 Pro play PS4 games?.
What about PS4 digital games?
Sony's instructions for a supported digital game are to open Game Library from Games home, select your game and choose Download if it is not installed. Sony also describes Wi-Fi transfer from PS4 and access from compatible USB storage. Backward compatibility is not a promise of a free PS5-version upgrade: that is a separate, game-specific offer.
Do PS4 games run better, at 60fps or in 4K?
Sometimes, but not for every game. Sony says select PS4 games benefit from Game Boost, which may provide a higher or smoother frame rate. That does not guarantee 60fps or 4K. Check the individual game's information rather than assuming a new console changes its frame-rate or resolution limits.
Which games do not work?
Sony says the overwhelming majority work, not all of them. Its Sony's PS5 backward-compatibility support page maintains the current PS4-only list, and PlayStation Store marks incompatible games "Playable on: PS4 only". Even supported PS4 games can show errors or unexpected behavior, and some features may be missing. Sony recommends trying a game before buying add-ons for it on PS5.
PS3 discs are not supported. That is a different compatibility question from PS4 games. For movie discs rather than game discs, see does PS5 play DVDs?.
